“We’re back,” calls out the regional chief: At the Southwest Party Congress in Freiburg, the comrades cheer for their success in the federal elections – and spread a spirit of optimism.
Outside, red SPD flags are shining under a blue sky, and the mood in the Freiburg exhibition center couldn’t be any better this Saturday. “Everyone is satisfied, everyone is happy, everyone is beaming!” Shouts a member of the state parliament even before the start. The newly elected member of the Bundestag Heike Engelhardt from Ravensburg cheers: “What a great party we are!” Takis Mehmet Ali, the new elector from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald constituency, agrees: “You can just be happy there.”
Officially, the party congress serves to elect delegates, but the defining topic is of course a different one: After 1972, 1998 and 2002, the Social Democrats became the strongest force in the federal government for the fourth time in 2021. In …
