The Sparta footballers failed to retaliate against Viking Stavanger and after a 1:2 loss, they are already in the 2nd preliminary round of the European Conference League. Slavia has the opposite feeling, it was able to win 7-0 over St Joseph’s in the rematch and advances further.
After a goalless home draw, Sparta needed to take action in Norway. But the strong defense of Viking was waiting for her again. Letenští were more active at the beginning of the match, but the goals still did not come.
It wasn’t until the 42nd minute that Sparta got there, and Zelený, who ran to the center and scored with his head, took the lead and deserved it. At that moment, the people of Prague should have been riding, but a cold shower came in the form of a quick equalizer. Vevatne made his mark with a shot from the edge of the box and the score was 1:1.
In the second half, Sparta started to be less dangerous and it became more and more difficult to get into the defense of the Norwegian opponent. On the contrary, Viking felt a chance to decide this match and created a couple of dangerous actions.
Nevertheless, it looked as if the duel would eventually go to overtime. Of course in 90+2. in the minute, a huge miss was made by the defender Hanck, who had a bad deal with the goalkeeper Holc and greased the Viking players with a bad pass. Mai Traoré took advantage of the opportunity and sent the Norwegian team to the next preliminary round of the European Conference League, Sparta ends after the final collapse in the cups.
On the contrary, Slavia acted more experienced and managed the rematch against the Gibraltar team with flying colours. In the end, it turned out to be the club’s biggest cup win. The Slavists won 7:0 at home and will face Greek Panathinaikos in the next preliminary round.
New father Peter Olayinka also scored twice for the sewn up team, and Václav Jurečka was also among the scorers, for whom it was the first competitive goal.
