Spartans: On June 19, the trial for voter fraud – 2024-04-29 21:24:48

On June 19, 2024, the Athens Appeals Prosecutor’s Office determined the criminal trial for the Spartans case regarding the fraud of the electorate.

This will be the first trial in the annals of the post-colonial period for defrauding the electorate with accused sitting MPs and the development of the case is awaited with interest as its result, whatever it may be, will in fact have, apart from criminal and political ramifications.

Specifically, the 11 members of parliament who were elected with the Spartan party, including those who subsequently became independent, will sit in the defendant’s dock, who are accused of being the natural perpetrators of the criminal act, except for the president of the party, Vassilis Stiga, on the occasion of his statements which initiated the investigation that resulted in criminal prosecution.

Also accused in the same case is the already imprisoned Ilias Kasidiaris, who is serving his first-trial sentence for running a criminal organization and is charged as a moral perpetrator in the fraud of the voters, as well as a lawyer who is attributed the role of an accomplice, as it is considered that he was the “bridge” in the communication of the prisoner Il. Kasidiaris with the deputies of the Spartans.

As is known, the investigation was conducted personally by the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Georgia Adelini, on the occasion of statements by Vassilis Stiga about methods in the party that referred to “Greek mafia” and “don Corleone”. Afterwards, the supreme prosecutor addressed her document to the Parliament and, asking for permission to summon the deputies as suspects, cited the evidence that – in her opinion – showed that the real leader of the Spartan party was Ilias Kasidiaris.

It is worth noting that with this rationale the Spartan party functioned as a “cloak” for Ilias Kasidiaris. Last Wednesday, the judges of the A1 Political Department of the Supreme Court blocked the road to the European elections, excluding the Spartan party.

In the “mosaic” of justice, after the determination of the trial, what is expected with particular interest now is the decision of the Electoral Court on which the parliamentary future of the Spartans will depend.
