The trial of 11 members of the “Spartiates” party, Ilias Kasidiaris and a lawyer, was adjourned again for November 22. The two are accused of voter fraud.
The trial before the Single-member Court of Appeal was interrupted for the second time, as the main prosecution witness, party president Vassilis Stigas, was absent from today’s session.
The reactions
The absence of the president, due to his presence in the Plenary Session of the Parliament, caused the strong reaction of the president of the court. At the beginning of the meeting, she commented that “this trial will take place today! Did you get it? We will begin, swear in the witness, and either adjourn or continue. You will tell Mr. Stiga that this (: the absence) is considered a lack of respect by the court. The trial will take place today, there is no way. Tell Mr. Stiga to be here at 11 o’clock. The Parliament is next door. Tell him it’s contempt of court». In fact, after that he stopped the trial.
However, Vassilis Stigas did not appear when the court resumed its seat. Instead, his partner appeared, who stated that the witness cannot come because of the meeting of the plenary session of the Parliament to discuss a serious bill, where he will speak as the president of the party.
The absence of the president of the party, “Spartiates” ignited the atmosphere. The president asked to investigate if the witness can come to the court within the day, otherwise the trial should be suspended.
Ilias Kasidiaris and his lawyer intervened in the discussion, stating that they wish the process to be completed quickly. As, as he claimed, because of this case, his detention in Domokos prisons for the “Golden Dawn” is being extended.
The accused MPs also expressed their opposition to the new suspension of the trial. They themselves stated that they want the trial to be completed as quickly as possible and “to end this case».
