Sparta stunt and comes with Okoye news: ‘He proved us right’

Sparta has stunted by Stores Okoye a new contract for no less than three (!) seasons. The sought-after goalkeeper suddenly sees his transfer value skyrocket.

Okoye’s contract with Sparta initially ran until 2022, but the Castle Club had an option to extend that contract by two years. That has been lifted and Sparta has even managed to negotiate for a year. Okoye is therefore fixed in Rotterdam until 2025.

Okoye is on the radar of many clubs. Among others at AZ, where he is seen as a possible successor for Marco Bizot who left for France. Because Okoye is still with Sparta for another four years, technical director Henk van Stee can in principle ask what he wants. In addition to AZ, clubs from abroad are also closely monitoring Okoye’s situation. The German-Nigerian goalkeeper has had a strong first season in Rotterdam.

“A year ago we attracted Maduka because we thought he was a great talent,” says Van Stee on the Sparta club site. “Last season he proved us right. With ten clean sheets in 28 games, he contributed to the club’s eighth place finish and was even voted Player of the Season by the supporters. He is also the first goalkeeper of the Nigerian national team. Obviously this meant that there was a lot of interest in him, but we both had the intention to continue longer and are very happy that we are extending his contract.”
