Christmas lights are power guzzlers. What is well known occasionally also harbors discussion material: In Switzerland 100 million kilowatt hours are used for this.
As cannot currently be overlooked, the festive lighting is part of the Advent and Christmas season. The Schwyz Office for Environment and Energy also uses the fact to compile some figures again: “During the Christmas season in Switzerland around 100 million kilowatt hours of electricity are used for Christmas lighting”, writes Christian Kiebele in the new “Umwelt News”. “This could cover the electricity needs of the households of a total of 25,000 families for one year.” And of course this kind of Christmas mood costs. In every Advent season, “eight million francs could be saved,” said Kiebele with the rollover costs.
White light is more harmonious
But understandably very few of us want to do without it. That is why “Umwelt News” also draws attention to how light immissions can be avoided with simple means: attention should also be paid to the color of the light. Warm white light from
LED lamps seem more pleasant and have a positive impact on people, animals and plants. “This is particularly important in the cold season. If possible, the light from the Christmas lights should not shine into the sky. This reduces light pollution that is negative for the animal world. “In addition, it dazzles neighbors less and disturbs their night’s sleep.” In any case, it should be switched off in the second half of the night so that it is hardly noticed during these hours.
