The Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau issues “EC cards” (Sparkassen Cards) with the new “VISAdebit” payment function. All existing cards remain fully valid until their expiry date.
New cards will be sent automatically – “Maestro” will not be switched off until the end of 2027
“Maestro” will no longer be offered from July 2023, but it will not be switched off immediately either. The payment method will remain active until the end of 2027. Sparkasse customers will automatically receive their new Sparkasse card in the post a few weeks before their current card expires. The expiry date is on the card.
Background: In addition to the girocard system in Germany, the current Sparkasse cards use a second payment method called “Maestro”, which can be used to pay outside of Germany or withdraw cash. However, as of July 1, 2023, no new cards will be issued with “Maestro” worldwide. The US company Mastercard has terminated the “Maestro” system. Because of this news, many consumers are currently unsure whether they can continue to use their cards.
There is no need for action for customers of Sparkasse Freiburg-Nördlicher Breisgau!
Since mid-June, the Sparkasse has been issuing “EC cards” for replacement cards and for new customers, which are equipped with the “Visa Debit” function in addition to the well-known Girocard function. This replaces the expiring “Maestro” payment method. This means that the Sparkassen-Card/VISAdebit (debit card) can be used at home and abroad in stationary retail, at ATMs and when paying on the Internet. If you want to use the Sparkassen-Card/VISAdebit digitally, you can also pay with Apple Pay or the mobile payment app (Android) at any time. With “giropay”, there has also been an additional function since the end of 2022, which can also be used to pay online.
