Sparkasse customers will soon be able to connect their EC cards to Apple Pay

Sparkasse customers with credit cards have already been able to use Apple Pay for around a month, in mid-July 2020. While the savings banks came a little late in this area, they postpone the next and much more important innovation soon. The change announced for late summer to be able to deposit giro and EC cards with Apple Pay could now be implemented as early as August. This was confirmed by a well-informed source Merkur.de.

A month earlier than planned?

Officially, the Sparkasse’s statement for the innovation is still “in late summer”. In terms of the calendar, this would mean that the introduction would have to take place by September 23, because it is officially the beginning of autumn. Due to Corona and the associated increase in contactless payments, an earlier introduction of Apple Pay with giro cards would also make sense.

How can I use Apple Pay with the debit card after it is introduced?

In order to store the giro card in Apple Pay, Sparkasse customers first need an iPhone. There you open the “Wallet” app and store supported cards as a means of payment. You can read all further information about Apple Pay in our detailed article:

Do I then no longer need a giro card?

In order to pay with Apple Pay or to be able to do without the card, the respective merchant must support this. For this he needs a new card device, which also supports the pure placing of cards, i.e. NFC. Accordingly, you should only leave the card at home if you can ensure it. You would then carry at least one less card with you that could potentially be lost. You will still need the giro card to withdraw money from the Sparkasse ATM. If you do this more often on the go, you can’t do without either.
