Spar Pilots New Petrol Station Format “Despar Express” with Italian Flair.

SALZBURG/GRAZ. With “Spar express”, Austria’s food retail market leader is also successful in the petrol station business; the strong expansion in recent years is mainly due to an intensification of the cooperation with the Doppler Group (Turmöl, BP), which started in 2009. Spar is now breaking new ground: as part of a cooperation with Eni Austria, a new petrol station format is being piloted: “Despar express”. Last week, the first test location opened at Alte Poststraße 87 in Graz, two more in Vienna-Landstraße and Salzburg-Mülln will follow in the summer.

Birra Moretti and Calzone

Despar, that’s what the retailer is called by the Italian neighbors – and this (holiday-related) association is also built on: the food and gastro offer offers not only a selected supermarket range, but also a particularly large number of original Italian products and is intended to “exude an Italian attitude to life”, how it says in a release from the dealer.

In the gastro area, popular holiday classics from the Eni range such as cornetti, calzones and panini are offered in addition to the usual snacks and small dishes; Lavazza coffee rounds off the focus on Italy. The range of groceries includes around 1,500 products, made up of international branded items and hundreds of Spar and Despar own brands with a focus on Italy.
The supermarket price guarantee applies to all own and exclusive brands, fruit, vegetables, meat, flowers, single ice cream, freshly baked bread and pastries. The shops, which will have an average sales area of 80 m², are open seven days a week with the usual (local) extended opening hours for petrol stations.
Marco Damonte, Managing Director Eni Group Austria: “Spar is a strong partner who is able to meet high standards not only in terms of product range but also in terms of design. We deliberately wanted to convey the Italian attitude to life. Spar and Despar are known to us as quality providers and we are very happy about the successful cooperation.”

hope for rollout

Hans K. Reisch, stv. CEO at Spar; if he has his way, a larger rollout is only a matter of time: “In Eni we have found a great partner for the newly developed concept. Despar express gas station shops are modern and Italian, which will certainly appeal to customers. If the test phase is successful, other Despar express locations throughout Austria will be considered.” (red)
