The scorer of the goal that gave victory to Spain in the Women’s World Cup this Sunday found out a few hours into the game that her father had died even before having entered the field to face the championship final against England. When she scored the winning goal, in the 29th minute, she dedicated it to the mother of a friend, who had recently died.
The 23-year-old Sevillian, who plays for Real Madrid and is captain of the women’s national football team in Spain, learned of her father’s death, who was ill, from her mother and brother, who were in Sydney to support her in the final of the championship. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and Real Madrid have already issued notes of condolence.
“The RFEF deeply regrets to communicate the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The football player learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football”, says the tweet posted on social network X.
In the official statement issued by the Madrid club that Olga represents, the president and the board of directors “deeply regret the passing of the father” of the player: “Real Madrid would like to express its condolences and affection to Olga, to her family and to all your loved ones. Rest in peace”.
