Spanish Women’s National Team Coach Jorge Vilda Sacked After Winning 2023 Women’s World Cup – Reasons Behind the Dismissal

Jakarta

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) officially sacks coach Spanish Women’s National Team, Jorge Vildaexactly 16 days after becoming champion 2023 Women’s World Cup.

The news was announced on Tuesday (5/9) evening WIB. The RFEF thanked the 42-year-old man for his dedication, which led La Roja to become a champion for the first time in history.

Not only as a coach, Vilda was also removed from the position of sporting director of the women’s national team, as well as ending her career full of twists and turns for eight years.

In the 343 word announcement, the RFEF did not explain the reasons for Vilda’s dismissal. However, it is strongly suspected that it has something to do with the coach’s relationship with Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF who is currently being suspended by FIFA for alleged sexual harassment.

Vilda is known to be a supporter of Rubiales. When he fell out with 15 Spanish players who were pushing for improved working conditions within the national team in September 2022, it was Rubiales who stepped up to defend him.

When Rubiales refused to step down at an extraordinary RFEF rally, Vilda appeared to applaud. Although he recently criticized Rubiales’ actions towards Hermoso openly, Vilda has lost influence in the national team.

81 female players, including the 23 players she led at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, have expressed their attitude that they will not play for the Spanish national team again while Rubiales is in office. The majority of Vilda’s staff had also resigned. Now, it was his turn to be kicked out.
