Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz is in the round of 16 singles at the final Grand Slam event of the year, the US Open. The defending champion and top-seeded player lost a set for the first time during the tournament in the 3rd round meeting with Briton Daniel Evans, but eventually triumphed 6:2, 6:3, 4:6, 6:3.
news-item-description">Immediately before the start of the final Grand Slam tournament of the US Open tennis season in New York, the leaders of the ATP and WTA singles rankings were Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Polish Iga Swiateková.
His next opponent will be the unseeded Italian Matteo Arnaldi, who eliminated the 16th seed Cameron Norrie from Great Britain 6:3, 6:4 and 6:3 and again improved his Grand Slam maximum. Alcaraz won easily both previous duels with Evans and even at the beginning of Saturday’s meeting he confirmed the role of the clear favorite. He won the first set easily 6:2 and it seemed that he would have an easy way into the top sixteen.
He quickly overcame even minor problems at the beginning of the second set, when he was losing 0:2. Immediately he won four games in the series and the second act also became his prey. However, in the third set, he did not turn the score after losing his own serve in the seventh game, and Evans forced a continuation of the match. The fate of the fourth set was decided by Alcaraz’s break in the sixth game to 4:2, and at 5:3 he converted his first match point. The match lasted 3:10 h.
“Dan is a nasty opponent, he knows how to surprise, so it was a good match for the spectators as well. We showed them some good strikes, some good exchanges and I believe they enjoyed it. We tried to entertain them. I’m really happy to go on , I saw a spider and I know that I have to concentrate above all on myself and go round after round,” evaluated the duel Alcaraz.
The 20-year-old Spaniard can defend his US Open title as the first man since Roger Federer did it in 2008: “Obviously defending the title is my goal. Roger did it last time, so I’d like to be a part of tournament history with him.”
Unseeded British tennis player Jack Draper reached the round of 16 singles at a Big Four event for the first time in his career. In the 3rd round match on Saturday, he defeated the native American Michael Mmoh in four sets 6:4, 6:2, 3:6 and 6:3. In the fight for the quarter-finals, he will meet the more successful of the fight between the eighth-seeded Russian Andrej Rubľov and the French Arthur Rinderknech.
