The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Madrid has requested the Investigative Court number 41 to archive the case opened against the wife of the President of the Government, Begoña Gómez, for alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business.
The Public Ministry has presented this Thursday a direct appeal against the decision of Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who opened preliminary proceedings following a complaint filed by the pseudo-union Manos Médicas. The complaint was based on several news items published in the media.
After learning of the order issued by the head of the Investigative Court number 41 of Madrid, which was notified this Wednesday, the Madrid Prosecutor’s Office requests in its appeal the revocation of that order and, consequently, the file of the case. Now, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado will have to decide whether he responds to the Public Ministry’s request or continues with the investigation. The first information indicated that one of the first measures that he could agree to is the statement of several heads of the media that published the news.
Clean Hands filed a complaint in the Plaza de Castilla courts after the publication of alleged information that affected the wife of the President of the Government. She was accused of having mediated with companies that had subsequently benefited from contracts or bailouts by the Government, including Globalia, the parent company of the airline Air Europa.
Step back from Clean Hands
Barely 24 hours after the news came to light, the pseudo-union Clean Hands said in a statement that “it will now be the judge who must verify whether said journalistic information is true or not”, so it is unaware of its veracity. He argues that they learned “through several digital newspapers, of a series of information that claimed alleged irregularities, which could be allegedly criminal, in the behavior of the wife of the President of the Government.”
After learning of the opening of a judicial investigation into his wife, Pedro Sánchez addressed the citizens through a letter published on the social network to decide whether to continue leading the Government.
“I’m not naive. I am aware that they are denouncing Begoña not because she has done something illegal, they know there is no case, but because she is my wife. As I am also fully aware that the attacks I suffer are not against me but rather against what I represent: a progressive political option, supported election after election by millions of Spaniards, based on economic progress, social justice and democratic regeneration.” The president said in the letter. “I am a man deeply in love with my wife. I need to stop and reflect,” he added.
