There seems to be no end to the turbulent times in the Spanish royal family. In 2014 Felipe succeeded his father Juan Carlos as king. Though once very popular as the guardian of Spain’s fledgling democracy, Juan Carlos had been discredited in recent years by various financial scandals, luxury trips while his country was going through a severe economic crisis and extramarital affairs.
In 2020, Felipe decided to renounce the inheritance of his father, who incidentally lives in exile, separated from his wife Sofia.
Princess Elena, the older sister of Felipe and Cristina, is also divorced. She divorced her husband Jaime de Marichalar in 2007.
