Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Advocates for the Recognition of Palestine and Criticizes EU Leaders

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he would continue steps to recognize a Palestinian state, despite not getting enough support from the European Union.

The Spanish leader directed sharp criticism at the leaders of European Union countries who did not take the same steps.

“The State of Palestine must be recognized first, in order to organize an international peace conference initiative led by Spain,” said Pedro Sanchez to foreign journalists in the capital, Madrid, Tuesday (5/12/2023).

“More than 130 countries have recognized the state of Palestine, while the United States and several European Union countries have not recognized it,” he continued, quoted from Al Jazeera.

According to World Review139 of the 193 UN members recognize the state of Palestine.

There are 54 countries that do not recognize Palestine as a country, such as the United States, Germany, England, France, Japan and Canada.

Spain itself has recognized the Palestinian state through its parliamentary resolution on July 1 2011.

The Spanish prime minister said efforts to take the initiative within the European Union to recognize Palestine were feasible.

If that doesn’t happen, he said, Spain’s approach to recognizing Palestine will continue.

Pedro Sanchez called on the European Union to take the same position as when it responded to Russia’s attack on Ukraine, in connection with Israel’s attack on Gaza.

He called on the leaders of European Union countries to refrain from double standard policies.

He added that if the European Union remains silent regarding Israel’s human rights violations and its occupation of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, it will risk isolation in the international community.

“Europe must review its policies,” he said.

He emphasized that resolving the existing problems between Israel and Palestine is in Europe’s interests, morally and geopolitically.
