The organization reportedly controls most of the cocaine trade in Europe.
Domenico Paviglianiti was arrested on the street in the Cuatro Caminos working-class district of Madrid. The arrest was a coordinated action between the police in Spain and Italy.
Paviglianiti allegedly wore fake Portuguese identification papers when he was arrested. He also had 6,000 euros in cash and six mobile phones.
Paviglianiti has been called the “boss of bosses” in the Italian media for his alleged role in various criminal acts in the 1980s and 1990s. He was arrested in Spain in 1996, but extradited to Italy three years later.
He began serving a life sentence, but was released after 20 years. The prosecuting authority in Italy issued an arrest warrant for him after a court concluded that his release in 2019 was a mistake.
