Spanish police have recorded 23 such attacks against young women who were out partying in Catalonia, most of them in Barcelona and the popular tourist town of Lloret de Mar.
Twelve such attacks have also been reported in the Basque Country in Spain.
No traces of drugs or other substances have been found in women who have been examined after such needle attacks, and it is therefore unclear why the victims become dizzy and drowsy. Nor have any of them experienced abuse following the needle pricks they received in their arms and legs, often in cramped and unorganized places.
In 2021, a number of needle attacks against young women were also reported in the UK, and earlier this year there were similar reports from France.
TV 2 has previously written about British Leah (18) who was drugged with a syringe in a nightclub.
Spanish police encourage anyone who experiences such attacks to report it immediately and see a doctor.
