Spanish Parliament approves State of Emergency until May 9 – Jornal Económico

The Spanish Parliament approved the extension of the State of Emergency (State of Alarm in Spanish territory) until May 9, as requested by the government led by Pedro Sánchez when the measure was decreed last Sunday, October 25, advances the “El Economista”.

The Spanish People’s Party refrained from extending the measure, despite the fact that the majority of the parties approved it. Depending on the evolution of the pandemic, parliament left open the possibility of revoking the State of Emergency in March.

The Spanish Assembly asked Pedro Sánchez to take stock every month regarding the evolution of the pandemic in the territory, namely on health, epidemiological and social indicators, so that Parliament can discuss the possibility of ending the State of Emergency on 9 March or extend it for another two months, until May 9.

After the Spanish Council of Ministers, which took place last Sunday, the government declared a State of Emergency after several requests from Spanish autonomous regions. Since Sunday, Spain has implemented a curfew between 11 pm and 6 am.

Gatherings with more than six people in public spaces and circulation between regions were also some of the measures restricted by the government, unless the reason for circulation is work, assisting the elderly or children and buying medicines.

Pedro Sánchez’s government declared a State of Emergency for the first time on March 14 and this is the third time that the measure has been decreed, in order to control the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic throughout the territory.
