Spanish midfielder Jenny Hermoso has defended the president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, after he was criticized for kissing her on the lips during the Women’s World Cup triumph on Sunday.
Rubiales was criticized on social media for celebrating with Irmoso during the coronation ceremony after Spain beat England 1-0 to win the title for the first time.
“I didn’t like it,” the midfielder said via an Instagram Live post-match, though she was laughing as she spoke.
She later said the moment stemmed from a “normal emotional disposition”.
“It was a completely spontaneous act of mutual reciprocity because of the immense joy that winning the World Cup brings,” Hermoso told AFP.
“The president and I have a good relationship, his behavior with all of us was wonderful and it was a natural gesture of affection and gratitude… We won the World Cup and we will not deviate from what is important,” she added.
Hermoso missed a penalty in the match, but Spain held on to win with an Olga Carmona goal in the first half.
