The Spanish fire brigade rescued a group of 120 Dutch students and twenty teachers who were surprised by a strong storm on Sunday afternoon.
The group was hiking in Girona, Spain, when the weather turned. The Catalan weather service had issued a bad weather warning for this area. Around 3 p.m., the fire service received a report that the group was in distress.
The group was on their way from the Sant Eudald de Jou church to Pont de Llierca, a 28 meter high bridge in the province. During the walk the temperature suddenly plummeted, accompanied by hail and strong winds. They deviated from the walking route to take shelter. After that they couldn’t find their way back. The fire brigade deployed seven vehicles and a helicopter to bring the group to safety.
According to Spanish media the students, teachers and supervisors are doing well. One of them had mild hypothermia. Another has a foot injury. They are back at the campsite where they stayed. They also suffered bruises from the hail. According to the AD it would concern students and teachers of the Christian lyceum Zandvliet in The Hague.
