The Spanish social drama “O Corno” by director and screenwriter Jaione Camborda has been awarded 71st edition of the San Sebastián Film Festival won the Golden Shell. Camborda received the award on Saturday evening in the northern Spanish metropolis. She is the first Spanish filmmaker to receive the coveted award.
Numerous media outlets such as the state television broadcaster RTVE therefore unanimously described the award as “historic”. “I would like to share the award with all aspiring female filmmakers who will also receive the award in the future,” said the 40-year-old Camborda.
“O Corno” (“The Horn”) tells the story of the shell collector Maria (Janet Novás), who also carries out illegal abortions in Galicia in the early 1970s – when Spain was still ruled by dictator Francisco Franco. After an unexpected event, she is forced to flee to Portugal and fights for her survival. The film is about motherhood, solidarity among women, the right to one’s own body and abortion. Topics that are still very relevant in today’s Spain.
The Silver Shell for best director went to the duo Wang Ping-Wen and Yu Yi-Hsun from Taiwan, who entered the race with the film “A Journey in Spring”. The Japanese Tatsuya Fuji (“Great Absence”) and the Argentine Marcelo Subiotto (“Puan”) were honored as best leading actors. The jury’s special prize went to the film “Kalak” by the Swede Isabella Eklöf.
