Moscow. The Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel la Católica to the commissioner of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Unrwa), Philippe Lazzarini.
“Yesterday, at the Permanent Mission of Spain to the UN, I awarded the Grand Cross of Isabel la Católica to UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarini, reiterating Spain’s support for the organization,” Albares wrote on the social network
The Spanish minister stressed that the work of UNRWA is crucial for humanitarian aid to reach the Gaza Strip and for 6 million Palestinian refugees in the region.
On October 7, a coordinated attack by the Palestinian movement Hamas against more than 20 Israeli communities resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths, around 5,500 injuries, and the capture of 253 hostages, of which nearly 100 were later released in prisoner exchanges.
In retaliation, Israel launched a declaration of war against Hamas and launched a series of bombings on Gaza, which have so far left more than 34,000 Palestinians dead and some 76,900 injured.
Russia and other countries urge Israel and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire and advocate a two-state solution, approved by the UN in 1947, as the only possible way to achieve lasting peace in the region.
