Spanish Cinema Gaining Popularity Worldwide: Focus on China and Asia Buyers – Málaga Festival Industry Zone Coordinator Annabelle Aramburu Talks Trends in Film Industry

Málaga, March 5 (EFE).- Spanish cinema is increasingly popular in other countries, mainly in Europe and Latin America, although China and its Asian neighbors are emerging as buyers of these productions, especially “white and family” series and films. that tell “universal” stories.

This is what Annabelle Aramburu, coordinator of Mafiz (Málaga Festival Industry Zone), the industry area of the Malaga Spanish Film Festival (Spain), tells EFE, which has the main objective of promoting the dissemination and promotion of Ibero-American cinematography.

Before a film hits the red carpet, Aramburu explains, some “previous steps” are necessary and that is what Mafiz covers: from supporting new talent to finding financing to carry out the projects.

Mafiz is structured into a dozen events focused on aspects such as the co-production of films between countries, the promotion of collaboration between professionals, new audiovisual platforms or the promotion of sales of Spanish cinema.

The latter is dealt with by Spanish Screenings Contents, a meeting dedicated to the promotion of Spanish cinema that was born 24 years ago and has established itself in Malaga as a reference space for the internationalization of the audiovisual sector.

In this edition, around seven hundred buyers, sellers, distributors and other professionals in the audiovisual industry from 61 countries are expected to participate until Friday in the different activities of Spanish Screenings Contents.

The vast majority of European countries and also Latin America, a region “very similar” to Spanish cinema, are represented.

Also noteworthy is the presence of professionals from Asia, particularly China, which “is gaining a lot of strength in the purchase of Spanish cinema,” Aramburu highlights.

“The Chinese like white films, like comedies, and we have very familiar films, which is what they consume. They are very similar to the films we make,” says the Mafiz coordinator, who recalls that China does not like it. They like productions with sexual or political content.

“Our cinema travels much better because they are international stories and that makes people identify with them more,” he adds.

This expert assures that the audiovisual sector in Spain is experiencing its best moment: “We are geniuses in series production, we make impressive horror and genre films and we win many awards at festivals. Spanish cinema is increasingly universal.”

Spain, in his opinion, has matured and has been able to create an industry around the audiovisual sector that “works and very well.” Its productions enjoy prestige and good reception abroad and the country has also established itself as one of the most competitive places to come to film.

Its main challenge, Aramburu believes, is to look for financing formulas linked to private investment that allow it to depend less and less on subsidies, because “that does not create an industry.” EFE
