Washington. Celebrity chef José Andrés told Reuters on Wednesday that the Israeli attack that killed seven of his food aid workers in Gaza had targeted them “systematically, car by car.”
In a video interview, Andrés stated that the charity group World Central Kitchen (WCK), founded by him, maintained clear communication with the Israeli army, which, according to the chef, knew the movements of its collaborators.
It wasn’t a “bad luck situation where, ‘oops,’ we dropped the bomb in the wrong place,” Andrés said. “Even if we were not in coordination with the (Israel Defense Forces), no democratic country and no army can target civilians and humanitarian workers.”
The aid workers were killed when their entourage was hit shortly after they oversaw the unloading of 100 tons of food brought to Gaza by sea. The Israeli military expressed its “deep sadness” over the incident and Prime Minister Netanyahu called it unintentional.
Andrés said that he was supposed to be in Gaza with his team, but that for different reasons he “could not return” to the place.
