The Spanish Catholic Church will financially compensate all victims of sexual abuse. The Association of Spanish Bishops (CEE) announced this on Friday. With the decision, the bishops return to an earlier position on compensation.
The church investigates on a case-by-case basis whether a victim will be paid. This can also happen if the perpetrator has died or has not been convicted.
A “moral condemnation” is sufficient for compensation. What exactly this includes has not been disclosed. It is also not known how high the compensation can be. Previously, the church saw no point in paying a sum of money if there was no conviction.
“In principle, the amount should be transferred by the perpetrators who committed the crimes,” the CEE Secretary General said. “If the perpetrator has died, the institutions must pay.”
Within the Spanish Catholic Church, more than 200,000 minors are said to have been victims of sexual abuse since 1940. An independent research committee came up with that estimate last month after a poll among eight thousand people.
