“Spanish Authorities Rescue Native Fish Species from a Dried-Up River due to Climate Change”

Spanish authorities had to save native fish species from a nearly dried up river. The country is currently suffering from particularly high temperatures and a lack of rainfall due to climate change.

The rescue operation took place in Girona, in northeastern Spain. This was necessary because of the low water level in the river Onyar. Due to the low oxygen content, the animals have difficulty surviving in low water.

Native fish species were taken from the almost dried up river and transferred to the Ter, a river nearby. Non-native species were not saved but killed to prevent contamination of the drinking water supply.

The fish were saved due to the ongoing drought in Spain. The amount of precipitation has been below average for 36 months in a row. April 2023 is fast becoming the driest April on record. It is also particularly warm for the time of year.

Due to the drought, reservoirs are on average only half full. In the northeastern region of Catalonia and the southern region of Andalusia, the reservoirs are even only a quarter full.
