Spanish airline Air Nostrum presents its own train company

Air Nostrum establishes Iryo in collaboration with the Italian Trenitalia. The former has 55 percent of the shares, Trenitalia 45 percent. The trainsets ordered by the company are also manufactured in Italy by Hitachi Rail and Alstom. These are so-called ETR400s that can travel 360 kilometers per hour. The first units have already been delivered and are now being tested.

Spain now has an extensive network of high-speed lines, as a result of which the aircraft has lost a lot of ground as a domestic means of transport. Viewed in this way, it is not surprising that Air Nostrum is investing in high-speed trains. With Iryo, which is being marketed as a budget brand, Air Nostrum hopes to transport approximately 50 million travelers by rail in ten years.

Increasing competition
Competition is increasing on the Spanish high-speed rail network. In addition to the Spanish national railway company Renfe, the French SNCF is already active there with the Ouigo brand. This has led to fierce competition, resulting in lower ticket prices. Consumers benefit from this and are increasingly opting for the high-speed train.

Elsewhere in Europe, too, there is increasing competition on the railways due to liberalisation. This is seen by experts as an important step to better compete with the aircraft. In Italy, Trenitalia has been battling private Italo for years. Trenitalia also wants to drive in France, and Spain’s Renfe is making plans to compete with Eurostar. First between London and Paris, and later possibly also towards Amsterdam.

Air Nostrum operates many flights under the Iberia flag.
