Spaniards take to the streets after gay man dies at nightclub

People have taken to the streets in about a hundred places in Spain because of the death of a gay man. Samuel Luiz was beaten by seven men outside a nightclub in A Coruña on the night from Saturday to Sunday. The 24-year-old nurse later died in hospital.

According to witnesses, Luiz was video calling outside a nightclub. A man thought he was being filmed by Luiz and said, “Stop filming or I’ll kill you, faggot.” Before Luiz could respond, he was attacked by the man and several others, who continued to berate him.

Because of the swear words used, a homophobic motive of the perpetrators is obvious. The police do not rule that out, but say more research should provide a definitive answer.

#justice

In A Coruña, in the northwestern region of Galicia, protesters gathered in a square in front of the town hall. Luiz’s friends wore t-shirts with his likeness. After a moment of silence, the crowd shouted for justice. The slogan #justiciaparasamuel was used in various places.
