Former Spanish soccer player Juan Mata, the 2010 World Cup champion of South Africa, joined the group of owners of San Diego FC, the new franchise of the North American league (MLS).
Mata, who will be at the age of 36 in his career in the Australian league, will be the first active international soccer player to invest in an MLS team, San Diego FC said in a statement on Wednesday this time.
Englishman David Beckham, the minority owner of Inter Miami, was until now the only international player involved as an investor in the MLS franchise.
San Diego FC will become the 30th team in the North American league next season and among their first signings will be Mexican international Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano.
“Joining San Diego FC as an investment partner is an exciting opportunity to build something special in a city and league where growth is incredible,” Mata said in a statement from the California team.
In addition to his football career, which has seen him play for Manchester United and Chelsea, Mata has also led charitable initiatives such as “Common Amas”, which inspires footballers across the world to donate a fixed amount of their salary to social causes.
“Common Goal” is also a partner of “Right to Dream”, a community of football academies and teams on several continents chaired by the owner of San Diego FC, the Egyptian-British billionaire Mohamed Mansour.
“This club’s and Right to Dream’s commitment to community impact, excellence, and a vision of long-term success aligns perfectly with my own values,” said Mata, who has toured made a few years ago to the academies of Egypt and Denmark.
The Spaniard, who joined Western Sydney Wanderers of the Australian league last September, began his professional career in Valencia and then played in the English league for Chelsea, with whom he won the League 2012 Champions, and Manchester United.
With the Spanish team he lifted the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 trophies.
