Editorial, 07-10-2023.- Spain is one of the countries in the world with the greatest activity in donation and transplantation, which includes transplants of hematopoietic progenitors, known as bone marrow. In the country as a whole there are more than 480,000 bone marrow donors, nearly 8,000 in Aragon. With the aim of increasing this number, the ‘Match Tour’ campaign stopped this Tuesday in Zaragoza, to encourage bone marrow donation.
But who can donate bone marrow? Any healthy person between 18 and 40 yearswithout disease that could be transmitted to the recipient or pathology that could endanger the health of the donor due to the donation process.
As stated Heraldbone marrow transplant consists of replacing the marrow cells of the sick with others from a healthy donor for the treatment of certain blood diseaseslike leukemias.
Bone marrow donation is free, voluntary, confidential, anonymous and free. The process begins with the information provided to the potential donor and the informed consent signing. First, an initial analysis is performed, with the extraction of a blood sample to determine the histocompatibility system. The data is included in the Spanish Registry of Bone Marrow Donors (Redmo). In Aragon, during 2023, 94 donors of hematopoietic progenitors have been added to this list and 17 units of umbilical cord blood have been donated in the different maternity hospitals.
