According to “SchengenVisaInfo”, the respective ban has been in force in Spain since 2014, however, not all tourists who come to the country know about it.
“Cyclists caught wearing headphones can pay a 200 euro fine in Spain,” explains Lena Farnell, head of the “Cycle SOS” group.
At the same time, she emphasized that the relevant norm in the country works for safety purposes, because cyclists cannot hear other sounds on the road with headphones, such as vehicle signals or pedestrians’ screams.
The lack of headphones allows you to better experience the surroundings, which should reduce the number of traffic accidents to a minimum.
“Using headphones while cycling can put you and other road users at risk of safety. Listening to music compromises a cyclist’s ability to hear road traffic, including emergency vehicle sirens,” Farnell said.
She also pointed out that similar norms are in force in other parts of Europe.
