Spain’s Acting Prime Minister, P. Sánchez, Forms Government with Catalan Support: Controversy and Protests

Spain’s current Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (Spanish Socialist Workers Party – PSOE) is expected to be able to form another government after today’s planned parliamentary vote. This, almost four months after parliamentary elections in which none of the major parties made enough gains to easily form a government, has become possible thanks to the Socialist leader’s agreement to retain power with two Catalan parties. The Catalans promised support to P. Sánchez on the condition that the PSOE promises to pass in parliament a law on amnesty for those who were involved in the efforts to achieve the independence of Catalonia.

The conservative Spanish People’s Party (PP), which won the most votes in the election, and other right-wing parties have sharply criticized the Catalan amnesty bill, arguing that it is a direct interference with the independence of the judiciary. PP leaders have already called on the institutions of the European Union to intervene, just as it was done when there were concerns about the independence of the courts in Poland, Hungary and Romania. Polls show that around 70% of Spanish voters are against the Catalan amnesty, reports say Financial Times. There is also a lot of dissatisfaction among PSOE members and supporters. There have already been several large protests against the amnesty plans. Also on Sunday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Spanish cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valencia, to protest against the amnesty and criticize P. Sanchez’s efforts to maintain power at all costs, reports The Guardian.
