Spain has significantly improved its chances of reaching the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games after its 84-77 victory over Greece.
We review Spain’s chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals and the position it could occupy after Canada’s victory over Australia.
Spain Olympic Games Accounts
Spain’s victory over Greece leaves Sergio Scariolo’s team in a situation in which it will depend on itself to make it to the next round. However, Canada’s victory over Australia means that Spain is not mathematically guaranteed to finish at least third. However, it could even aspire to finish first in its group.
- Spain will top the group if they beat Canada and Greece beat Australia.
If Spain beats Canada and Australia beats Greece, the result would be a three-way tie with a 2-1 scoreline. The options would be as follows:
- If Spain beats Canada by 15 or more, it would be first in the group regardless of Australia – Greece
- If Spain beats Canada by 12 to 14 points, it would be second in the group if Australia beats Greece
- If Spain beats Canada by 11 or less, it would be third in the group if Australia beats Greece
*The scores could vary up or down depending on the points scored in the last round by Spain and Australia, although in the tiebreakers of points scored, the Spanish team comes out at a disadvantage with both rivals in the draws.
The options if Spain falls to Canada
If Spain loses to Canada, the team could only aspire to be third in groupIf Australia beat Greece, the team would be third and would not need any further calculations, but its options would become considerably more complicated if Greece beat the Australians.
These would be the numbers in case of victory for Greece and defeat for Spain:
- If Greece wins by 1 or 2 points, Spain would be 3rd with Australia 2nd and Greece eliminated.
- If Greece wins by between 3 and 17 points, Spain would be 4th
- If Greece wins by 18 or more points, Spain would be 3rd with Australia eliminated and Greece 2nd.
The match between Greece and Australia will be played before the Spain-Canada match, so Sergio Scariolo’s team will know whether they need to win or not to be able to aspire to be in the quarter-finals. They will also have to wait for the rest of the matches to decide who will be the best third-placed teams so that the draw pots can be definitively resolved.
