Spain will have more blue flags than last year

This year Spain will have more blue flags than last year, specifically with 23 more after announcing that 589 will wear this distinction. This is undoubtedly a fact that confirms the good condition of our coasts in what is going to be a summer marked by the coronavirus crisis.

The Environmental and Consumer Education Association (Adeac), promoter of the initiative, has published the list of blue flags that will distinguish the best beaches, ports and sustainable boats for the summer 2020 in our country. In its statement, it asks citizens for prevention, social distancing and capacity on the beaches to reduce risks.

In this edition, Spain has received a total of 688 blue flags, of which 589 correspond to beaches, 98 to marinas and 5 to sustainable tourist boats. Flags are won for 23 beaches and lost for 4 marinas.

Since 1987, Spain is the country with the most blue flags in the world, this year followed at a great distance by Greece (514), Turkey (508), France (507), Italy (482) and Portugal (387). By autonomous communities, the one with the most is the Valencian Community (134), followed by Galicia with 107, Andalusia with 100, Catalonia with 95, the Canary Islands with 51, the Balearic Islands with 38 and Murcia with 26.

It is noteworthy to mention that, of the 23 beaches that have won this distinction this year, 21 are in Andalusia. Adeac also confirms that 26% of Spanish beaches have been banned from receiving this flag for not complying with the quality of water required for bathing.
