The images from the floods in Spain are shocking, leaving behind the dead, missing and huge destruction. The waters engulfed the town of Letur, in the Albacete region, sweeping away cars, according to footage broadcast by Spanish television. Mayor Sergio Marin Sanchez said rescue services were looking for “three or four people” who were missing.

Torrential rains brought by a cold front moving along the southern and eastern parts of the Iberian Peninsula caused flash flooding. Authorities in the worst-hit areas are urging citizens to stay at home and avoid non-essential travel until further notice.
The phenomenon that caused the deadly floods is known in Spain and France as a “cold drop”, which occurs when cold air moves over the warm waters of the Mediterranean.
Atmospheric instability is created, causing warm, saturated air to rise rapidly, leading to the formation of towering clouds – Cumulonimbus – within hours, followed by heavy rain.
