A German tourist was attacked by a shark, Monday, losing her life, in Spain.
In particular, the incident took place about 500 kilometers away from the islands of the Canary Islands, the Spanish search and rescue services at sea (SASEMAR) reported to the French news agency (AFP).
A shark attacked the 30-year-old man, who was traveling on a catamaran, while he was swimming on Monday afternoon, 278 miles south-west of the island of Gran Canaria.
The Spanish emergency services were informed that a “medical evacuation” was needed and after consultation with the Moroccan authorities, they sent a helicopter to the sea area where the British pleasure boat “Dalliance Chichester” was located.
A few hours later, the 30-year-old tourist boarded the chopper (she lost a leg in the shark attack) and died of a heart attack while being transported to a hospital in the Las Palmas.
According to the special website vesselfinder.com, the Dalliance Chichester – a 17m yacht – had sailed from Las Palmas on Saturday, September 14.
Shark attacks are very rare in this area. Last year there were 69 shark attacks worldwide that killed ten people: four deaths were recorded in Australia, two in the USA and one in the Bahamas, Egypt, Mexico and France (in New Caledonia ).
