Spanish authorities are reacting strongly to a video shared by the Russian embassy in the country, which allegedly shows Spanish soldiers in a trench in Ukraine.
The Russian ambassador in Madrid, Yuri Klimenko, has therefore been called on the carpet to explain the situation. He was informed of the Spanish authorities’ objections to the video on Thursday.
The Russian embassy had already taken down the video on Wednesday evening after strong reactions from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Spanish newspaper El País writes that the video, which shows Spanish-speaking men in combat uniforms in a trench, gave the impression that Spanish soldiers were involved in fighting in Ukraine.
The Spanish Minister of Defense Margarita Robles has come out strongly against the video, which she believes is a Russian attempt to split the unity between countries in the EU and NATO by using disinformation.
She emphasizes that neither Spanish forces nor soldiers from other NATO countries are fighting in Ukraine.
