Calculations from the Spanish meteorological institute Aemet show that the average temperature was 0.4 degrees higher than the previous January record from 2016.
The temperature data extends back to 1961.
The winter heat caused the temperature to rise to almost 30 degrees in the Valencia region, which would have been more normal in June. In Barcelona, for example, people have flocked to beaches and outdoor restaurants.
The heat has worsened long-term drought in both Catalonia and Andalucía. In recent years, heat records have been continuously set in Spain, which is highly exposed to both heat waves and drought as a result of climate change.
– The Spanish know very well that climate change is here, said Agriculture Minister Luis Planas when the January figures were presented on Wednesday.
