Spain Sets Example for Gender Equality in Soccer with Name Change

It is not yet clear whether other countries will follow the example of Spain, which sought greater equality this week with an agreement between the federation and its national team, which won the last Women’s World Cup.

The name of the women’s national team usually includes “women’s football”. By removing the word, both the women’s and men’s national teams officially become known as the “Spain national football team”.

Interim President of the Spanish Football Federation, Pedro Rocha, said: “This is more than just a symbolic change. We want this to represent a shift in perceptions, and the recognition that football is football, regardless of who plays it.”

The European Football Association (UEFA) had previously held informal discussions on how countries should deal with such issues related to names, but no formal proposal was made.
