Spain became the first team to ensure qualification for the semifinals World Cup 2023. The result was obtained after defeating the Netherlands 2-1 in the quarter-finals, Friday (11/8).
The duel between the two teams ended equally strong in the first round. Neither Spain nor the Netherlands were able to score a goal and had to settle for a goalless draw until the break.
Drama ensued in the second half. Spain managed to score an advantage in the 81st minute thanks to Mariona Caldentey’s penalty.
The referee pointed to the spot after reviewing the VAR. Stefanie van der Gragt was judged to be handball when trying to block a cross in the penalty box.
Caldentey, who was plotted as an executioner, successfully carried out his duties perfectly. His shot towards the bottom left corner tricked goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
Left behind by one goal to make the Netherlands not broken. Andries Jonker’s squad continues to try to catch up in the remaining time.
As a result, Van der Gragt was able to equalize in injury time to be precise in the 90’+1 minute. The 1-1 draw lasted until the game was over and forced the game to go into extra time 2 x 15 minutes.
Barcelona’s young player, Salma Paralluelo, emerged as a hero after scoring a goal in the 111th minute.
Receiving Jenni Hermoso’s pass, Paralluelo, who entered as a substitute, calmly struck the round skin to the left of the goal to bring Spain 2-1 ahead.
Thus, Spain is the first team to qualify for the semifinals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Spain will face the winner of Japan vs Sweden which will compete at the Eden Park Stadium this afternoon.
While the other two quarter-final matches will take place on Saturday (12/8). Australia will face France, while England will meet Colombia.
