Memories of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, USA, are reawakening after the publication of a video showing two police officers using reckless violence against two unarmed black men in a neighborhood in the center of Madrid.
The video, for which Spain’s leftist parties have demanded an explanation, was reportedly taken last Friday and shows one of the men pinned to the ground by a police officer, who appears to be choking him.
A second officer is then seen hitting the immobilized man twice with a bat, before grabbing and punching another man standing a little further away.
As expected, the video went viral on the internet. A police source told the Europa Press news agency that the two men were arrested for undermining authority.
The source described the men as “hostile” towards the officers and said one of the officers had been injured. One of those arrested was later found to have drugs on him, according to the same information.
As the Guardian reports, the video in question caused outrage across Spain. The anti-racist campaign group SOS Racismo described the images as “another example of how state security forces are acting in Lavapiés (neighborhood in Madrid)”.
In its social media post, the group added: “Those of us who live in this neighborhood know that these actions are common and no one is doing anything about it.”
Until when?
What is the justification for this violent action?
