Spain Makes Historic Semifinal Appearance in FIFA Women’s World Cup

Spain qualified for the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time, after substitute Selma Paraiello scored the winning goal over the Netherlands 2-1 in extra time.
“This means everything to me,” said the 19-year-old Barcelona striker, who broke the tie. “It was an exceptional moment and amazing euphoria. I am in the utmost happiness.”
It was all too late as Mariona Caldente gave Spain the lead in the 81st minute from the penalty spot and Van der Grat grabbed a 91st-minute equalizer in her final match before retiring to take the game into extra time in front of more than 32,000 fans at Wellington Stadium.
The Netherlands, seeded ninth and runner-up in the previous edition, the United States, became the last title candidate to leave the tournament full of surprises, as America, Germany, Canada and Brazil had already left.
Spain’s historic qualification came despite the players’ rebellion during the preparation for the tournament, as 15 players refused to join the national team last September, citing the impact of competitions on their mental health, and they made direct complaints against coach Jorge Belda.
The Spanish Federation announced the support of Belda, but only six players from the rebels returned to participate in the World Cup.
