Spain Leads the World with Highest Number of Blue Flags for Beaches in 2023

This Thursday, the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) has updated the situation of Spain in the world classification of Blue Flags. And despite the drought and the loss of coasts, the data for this 2023 are positive, since the country has increased the number of blue flags that will fly on beaches, marinas and tourist boats throughout this year.

This award, which recognizes the excellence of the waters, the safety of bathers and beach services, has awarded Spain a total of 729 Blue Flags, of which 627 are for beaches in 250 municipalities (six flags more compared to 2022 ), 97 for marinas (six fewer than last year) and 5 for sustainable tourist boats (which do not present alterations).

Consequently, Adeac highlights that Spain is the country with the most blue flags for beaches in the world, since 15% of the total are found here.

“Spain is a world leader in tourism. Our coasts and beaches in numerous destinations are known and valued throughout the world. The quality and competitiveness of the tourist offer of our beaches is part of that reputation, of our country brand, and behind This merit is the excellent work carried out by all those workers who are dedicated to keeping our beaches ready: from municipal managers to street sweepers, lifeguards, gardeners or members of the State Security Forces and Bodies”, Rosa has considered in this regard Ana Morillo, Secretary of State for Tourism.

where are the blue flags

By region, the Valencian Community continues to be the one with the most Blue Flags, with a total of 153. It is followed by Andalusia, with 148, Galicia, with 125, and Catalonia, with 120. Less than one hundred have the Canary Islands (60), the Balearic Islands (42), Murcia (34), Asturias (15), Cantabria (11), Extremadura (10), the Basque Country (4), Melilla (4), Ceuta (2) and Madrid (1).

Of the 3,517 sea beaches that exist in Spain, almost half (1,710) are in the bathing water quality census. According to Adeac, 93% of these obtain an excellent rating, which is why they believe that they are likely to receive the hallmark.

The complete list can be consulted in this link.

Of all of them, 689 have applied as candidates and 627 have finally obtained it (91% of the candidacies), which “demonstrates the high level of the candidacies presented”.

“The most frequent reason for not obtaining the Blue Flag is not reaching the excellent quality of bathing waters on the beach. The second reason is non-compliance with the Coastal Law, due to excess occupancy or the presence of unauthorized facilities in the beaches,” explains Adeac.
