Spain: labor market continues to deteriorate in May

The number of job seekers could continue to increase in the course of the summer with the gradual reduction of aid to businesses.

Although slowing, the increase in the number of job seekers in Spain continued in May. According to the Spanish Employment Agency (SEPE), 122,458 additional people were registered unemployed, bringing the total to 3,936,000 (after seasonal adjustment). An average increase of 341,000 had been recorded in the previous two months.

In addition, a drop of 70,800 workers affiliated to social security should be noted, bringing the fall over the past three months as a whole to 1,119,000 people (-5.8%). The service sector continues to suffer the most, with a decline of 122,300 registrants last month, while the industry registered a decline of 6,000 affiliates. This was partially offset by an increase in registrants in construction (+ 47,800 people) and agriculture (+ 7,300).

The labor market in Spain has still not bottomed out. In addition, the extension of the partial unemployment scheme (ERTE) until the end of June means that employment does not deteriorate more significantly, people on partial unemployment being considered to be in employment. The number of job seekers could continue to increase in the course of the summer with the gradual reduction of aid to businesses.

On the other hand, the number of partially unemployed workers (ERTE) due to force majeure, fell sharply in May: 2,617,000,000 people were in this situation, a fall of 457,909 per compared to April.
