Spain is the first to supply modern western tanks to Ukraine

The newspaper relies on sources at the Ministry of Defence. The government in Madrid would also like to train the Ukrainian tank crews. Until now, Ukraine has received Soviet-made tanks, because Ukraine, as a former republic of the Soviet Union, has experience with this.

The news comes not long after the statement by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky last weekend, who said he hoped to get “good news” this week from Western allies about new arms shipments.

Shooting Sunday

At the same time as reporting the Spanish delivery, the Russians say they destroyed tanks given to Ukraine by Eastern European countries. That would have happened in the latest shelling this morning on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, high-precision long-range missiles were used to destroy the Russian T-72 tanks, as well as other armored vehicles in hangars.

Since the war started on Feb. 24, Russia has fired more than 2,500 rockets into Ukraine, Zelensky said during a video speech yesterday in which he accused the Russians of massive destruction of cultural monuments, churches and other religious sites in his country.

US President Joe Biden also decided last week to increase support for Ukraine. He said the US will provide the Ukrainian military with “more advanced missile systems and ammunition.”

The president cited “Javelin anti-tank missiles, Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, high-power artillery and precision missile systems, radars, unmanned aerial vehicles, Mi-17 helicopters and ammunition.”

Putin’s reaction

Russian President Vladimir Putin responded today by saying that his country will do everything it can to destroy heavy artillery installations supplied by the West. If such installations are delivered, “we will strike at those targets that we have not hit yet,” Putin said in an interview with Russian state television.
