Spain Highlights Commitment to Digitization and Closing the Digital Divide at International Summit of the Teaching Profession 2023

MADRID, 28 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

At the International Summit of the Teaching Profession 2023 (ISTP), held in Washington DC, the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training highlighted Spain’s commitment to promoting digitization and closing the digital divide.

At the meeting, the Secretary of State for Education, José Manuel Bar, explained the advances in the commitments acquired by Spain in the previous conference (held in Valencia), focused on the central role of teachers in the transformation of education.

Specifically, Bar has highlighted the implementation of the Plan for the Digitization of the Education System, the promotion of measures to advance equity -such as the scholarship policy and the programs aimed at students in vulnerable situations- and the initiatives to fight against gender gap.

“Education must be one of the best tools to successfully face the reduction of social inequalities and the construction of resilient and cohesive societies, but also inclusive, never segregating,” he explained during the summit.

To these commitments he has added the reinforcement of the role of teachers “so that the school has that transformative and supportive character that allows it to grow as a society committed to social justice, inclusion, solidarity and sustainability”.

“Spain maintains a firm commitment to improving its educational system, reflected in the initiatives and programs developed in line with the commitments assumed in the ISTP 2022”, summarized the Secretary of State in the session in which Spain handed over the baton of the organization to the Secretary of Education of the United States, Miguel Cardona.

Taking advantage of his participation in the summit, José Manuel Bar has held several bilateral meetings with Secretary Cardona; the Director of Education at the OECD, Andreas Schleicher; the Secretary of State for Education of Sweden, David Lindberg; and the secretary of the Australian Department of Education, Tony Cook.
