Spain has seen a significant increase in coronavirus infections

Some Spanish regions are considering tightening sanitation and pandemic measures. The incidence of coronavirus infection is high mainly among people around 30 to 35 years of age.

Spain has seen a significant increase in new coronavirus infections. The Ministry of Health today announced another 32,600 cases in the last three days, last Monday it was about a third. The incidence of the disease is strong mainly among younger people, the AFP agency reported. Some Spanish regions are considering tightening hygiene and pandemic measures, such as reducing nightlife.

“The average age of those infected is around 30 to 35 years, regardless of the variant (coronavirus),” said chief government epidemiologist Fernando Simón. Since Friday, the number of new cases in the last 14 days per 100,000 population has increased by a third to 204. Among people aged 20 to 29, however, it is about 640.

There are several reasons for the higher incidence of the disease among younger people. The vaccination coverage of this part of society is lower than for the elderly, as the Spanish authorities strictly adhered to the age distribution when administering the covid-19 vaccine. According to Simon, however, in recent weeks compliance with basic hygiene rules, such as wearing veils, has slowed down, especially at events attended mainly by young people. According to him, these actions contributed to the spread of the infection. In the last two weeks, the Spanish authorities have revealed a high number of infections among students who took part in the end of the school year celebrations in Mallorca.

Unlike Britain or Portugal, Spain is not the dominant variant of coronavirus delta mutation. The increase in the number of people infected also did not affect the number of hospitalized and serious cases. On Monday, 23 new covid-19 deaths were reported in the last three days. Compared to previous days, the number has not changed much.

Due to the deteriorating epidemic situation, Andalusia and Catalonia are considering renewing some measures. At the end of June, for example, the obligation to wear veils outside was abolished. The Autonomous Community of Navarre has already decided to shorten the opening hours of restaurants and bars, which will be open until one o’clock in the morning.

Since the onset of the epidemic, 3.9 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Spain. About 81,000 people have died from covid-19.
