Bordeaux. A poor performance by the defence prevented Spain from securing top spot in Group C, now occupied by Egypt, which qualified for the quarter-finals after winning 2-1 in the closing match of the group stage of the Olympic football tournament.
The pharaonic victory (7 points) left the Dominican Republic (2), debuting in the competition, with no chance of qualifying. They tied 1-1 with Uzbekistan (1), previously eliminated, in a match played simultaneously in Paris.
With the ticket in hand since last matchday (6 points), the Spanish coach Santi Denia gave his star players a rest and lined up the players who had played the least amount of minutes.
The gamble paid off for one of the gold favourites, as the Egyptians were outnumbered by their substitutes, with Ibrahim Adel as their best man. They will now have to fight for a place in the semi-finals against the winner of Group D – probably Japan – while Egypt will face the second-placed team in that group, which also includes Paraguay, Mali and Israel.
Ibrahim Adel scored both goals at the Bordeaux stadium, both after taking advantage of mistakes by the Iberian defence.
La Roja shortened the gap in the final stretch (90) with a header from attacker Samu Omorodion.
