Spain extends border control with Portugal

The Monção Chamber said today that it maintains for two more weeks all the measures to prevent and contain the covid-19 in force during the period of state of emergency enacted following the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus.

In a statement sent to the press today, that municipality justified the decision to maintain “all extraordinary and urgent measures” with the need for “precaution and care, whose objective is to reinforce the procedures of responsibility and civility of the population”.

“Monçans have to realize that we still have work ahead of us before we see the light at the end of the tunnel. This is not the time to drop your arms. It is time for us to remain united, attentive, cautious and responsible ”, said the Mayor, António Barbosa, mentioned in the note.

On Sunday, the Chamber of Monção indicated the existence of 105 positive cases in the municipality, 74 of which related to Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Monção, eight deaths, six of which were users of the institution.

In the document, the municipality led by the PSD pointed out that the municipality’s Balcão Único “will continue to be closed to face-to-face service, maintaining telephone and digital contacts for the reception of processes and requests”, and that the headquarters of the Euro-city Monção – Salvaterra de Miño, in Galicia, does not provide service to workers temporarily ”.

The municipality also decided to keep the Minho river ecopista and the Caldas and Lodeira parks closed to the public.

Cultural services, such as the library, archives, the Interactive Tourism Shop (LIT) and the João Verde cinema, also remain inaccessible to the public.

“The same is true of the county’s tourist facilities – the Alvarinho museum, the Torre de Lapela, Castro de São Caetano museum centers – and the weekly fair remains suspended”, specifies the municipality, adding that “it will continue to support health, relief and safety professionals, as well as the most vulnerable social institutions and families in the municipality ”.

“Starting tomorrow [terça-feira] an awareness campaign starts, with the population and traders, on the use of a mask, hand hygiene and social distance ”, he specifies.

Portugal accounts for 1,063 deaths associated with covid-19 in 25,524 confirmed cases of infection, according to the daily bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) on the pandemic.

Portugal entered Sunday in a calamity situation, after three consecutive periods in a state of emergency since 19 March.

This new phase of combating covid-19 provides for mandatory confinement for sick people and under active surveillance, the general duty of home collection and the mandatory use of masks in public transport, public services, schools and commercial establishments.
