Spain crushes Costa Rica…and achieves the biggest World Cup victory in its history

Spain achieved their biggest World Cup victory on Wednesday, beating Costa Rica 7-0 at Al Thumama Stadium in Qatar.

Spain won their group at the World Cup in Qatar by 3 points, ahead of Japan, who achieved a big upset by beating Germany 2-1.

In the sides’ first meeting at tournament level, Spain, led by many of their young stars, looked from the outset determined to avoid what happened with the German and Argentine giants, who also lost to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday Saudi Arabia 1-2 in Group C.

And while waiting for the duel between Spain and Germany on Sunday in the second leg, coach Luis Enrique’s men did what was required of them and even more, taking all three points in the first half after closing it with three clean goals, before to add four in the second, giving their country the biggest victory in the history of its participation in the finals.

Spain’s biggest victory in the previous World Cup came at the expense of Bulgaria, 6-1, in the 1998 World Cup in France.

Dani Olmo (11), Marco Asensio (21), Ferran Torres (31 penalties, 54), Gavi (74), substitutes Carlos Soler (90) and Alvaro Morata (90+2) scored the historic seven goals.
